New Dwarf Faba Bean Genotype

S. Khalil, S. Rajaram, A. Sarker, and R. Malhotra
Biodiversity and Integrated Gene Management Program

Name of Line: HBP/S0/2003-Fam 98

Pedigree: Single-plant selection from an improved population, developed at ICARDA during the 2004/05 season, and multiplied in the screenhouse over the next two seasons. Parents of the improved population included 10 inbred lines from Iraq (Line numbers 14, 167, 175, 531, 547, 552, 557, 672, 716, and 762), all characterized by long pods and large seeds. These lines were used as female parents. The male parent was germplasm accession 'Triple White' from Sudan, characterized by white flowers (zero tannin), white hilum, white seed coat and early maturity. The new line has short stem (20 cm), white flowers (zero tannin content), and small seeds with white seed coat and white hilum. This line can be used for faba bean improvement, particularly for low tannin content, lodging resistance, and as a marker for out-crossing. It is suitable for use as an intercrop because of its dwarf nature (no shading or lodging).
