AVRDC core funds for vegetable research

One of major constrain in vegetable crops’ research is limited of varieties with a higher yield, resistance to diseases, with better quality of fruits and not enough seeds for reproduction. To solve this problem AVRDC - The World Vegetable Center has organized CAC regional varietal trial under different agricultural ecosystem conditions. New germplasm was introduced for regional trials in eight countries of the region.

In 2009 total 197 entries of nine vegetable crop species were studied. A number of promising accessions were selected in each country and seeds of promising varieties were multiplied. Fifty promising lines of ten vegetable crop species selected previous years in eight CAC countries were trialed in competitive variety trials in 2009. Total 28 varieties of 6 crop species including tomato, sweet and hot pepper, eggplant, vegetable soybean, mungbean and bean varieties are under state variety trials in Armenia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in 2010.

Six varieties have been released and have been included in the State Register in Uzbekistan, including early maturing with higher yield vegetable soybean varieties Ilkhom (2007) and “Universal” (2008), mungbean varieties “Zilola” (2008) and “Marjon”(2008),mid maturing with higher yield and big size of fruits hot pepper varieties Uchkun (2009) and “Tillarang” (2010). Arrangement of promising and released varieties seeds multiplication was conducted for supplying of farmers. Sustainable seed propagation of elite crop varieties is promoted, and strengthened, with modern and efficient production and seed handling systems.
