Public awareness and farmer workshops: The National and Regional Project Components have been actively involved in explaining project objectives and strategies through: • Farmers' workshops organized at the project sites (2 in Jordan , 3 in Lebanon, 2 in Syria, and 3 in the Palestinian Authority); • Public awareness days through visits to project sites and public gatherings, such as the two meetings held at Sweida and Lattakia, attended by more than 1000 and 650 people respectively, representing women's, youth, and farmers' unions, and school children; • Media presentation (one radio and two television interviews by the Regional Coordinator, TV and radio interviews with National Project Managers, telecast by the national and local channels, and newspaper interviews);

• Participation in international and national conferences: - The Regional Coordinator, Project Manager, and Project Coordinator of the Palestinian Component participated in the 'UNESCO/ALECSO regional workshop on enhancing capacity building for the conservation of biodiversity in the Arab region using the biosphere concept and sites', and in the Second regional meeting of the coordinating council of the ArabMAB network', held in Morocco, 4-10 September 1999. A paper on 'Community-based in situ conservation of dryland agrobiodiversity' was presented. - Contribution to the 'International conference on conservation of biodiversity in the dry areas', organized in Kuwait on 26- 30 March 2000, with a joint keynote address on 'Policy and education reform needs for conservation of agrobiodiversity', by Dr Solh, Dr Amri, Dr Ngaido and Dr Valkoun, and a poster on 'Community-driven in situ conservation of dryland agrobiodiversity'. Another keynote address made by Dr J. Peacock, ICARDA Regional Coordinator for the Arabian Peninsula, on 'Conservation through utilization: a case study of the indigenous forage grasses of the Arabian Peninsula'"; - Participation in the 'International planning meeting for the global project on strengthening the scientific basis of in situ conservation of agricultural biodiversity on-farm' organized by IPGRI in Morocco, 8-15 April 2000; - A poster on 'Community-based in situ conservation of dryland agrobiodiversity' was presented at EPCOT Centre, USA, as a contribution to the CGIAR stand during 13 March to 30 June 2000. • Technical backstopping is a major objective of the Regional Component and Table 4 summarizes the international expertise provided to the National Project Components.
