English as a Second Language (ESL) IGCSE 1 Students will learn to use English effectively as a means of practical communication. Work will be related to the kinds of situations students are likely to encounter later in life and the kinds of topics and interests about which they are likely to need to communicate. There is a strong emphasis on the ability to understand and impart information.
English as a Second Language (ESL) IGCSE 2 This is continuation of ESL IGCSE leading to the student taking the IGCSE examination in May/June.
English IGCSE 1 This course prepares students for IGCSE qualifications in both English Language and Literature. It combines First Language components with the study of literature, over a two year period. The first language syllabus will develop students' ability to communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing. Students will be encouraged to read widely, to use relevant vocabulary, to employ correct, grammar, spelling and punctuation, and to display a sense of style and audience. It will help students to understand and respond appropriately to what they see, hear and experience, and to enjoy the full variety of their first language. In addition, it will complement their other studies by developing general skills such as the ability to analyze, synthesise, make inferences, order facts and present opinions.
English IGCSE 2 This is the continuation of English IGCSE 1 and leads to the student taking the IGCSE examinations in both English Language and English Literature in May/June. The latter part of the course will be preparatory for English IB courses.
English IBS/IBH A1 For the majority of candidates Language Al will be their best language, in that they are expected to have native or near-native command of the language. It is therefore the candidate's primary means of communication and is a key to the study of other disciplines. The Language A1 program aims to promote an application of the wealth and subtleties of the language and to lead an awareness of linguistic structures. It seeks to facilitate the clear expression of ideas, to aid clear, precise presentation of argument and to assist in the understanding of both oral and written discourse. The program encourages the development of an appreciation of literature and knowledge of the culture of the student's own society and that of other societies. In view of the international nature of the International Baccalaureate, the program does not limit the study of literature to the achievements of one culture. Through the study of World Literature, which is a central and integral part of the program, the student may gain a broadened and international perspective of literature and human thought.
