Elementary School Principal's Letter

Dear prospective and current members of our school community,

Our school is a warm and welcoming, and lively place for our students to learn. We are a combination of local and international teachers and support staff and we work closely (and very hard) to provide the very best of international curriculum. Our language of instruction is English.

The elementary school curriculum is based on the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP). The PYP is taught around the world, by both national and international schools. It is highly regarded in education circles and is supported by a large team of advisors working from the International Baccalaureate offices in places like Switzerland and Wales . The school was authorized to deliver this program in 2003 and is going from strength to strength. We will soon undertake our three year review – this is an important process and allows both teachers and parents to be confident that our school meets all the standards. We also undertake external assessment through ACER testing for Grades three and five.

The local community, as well as Syria as a whole, provides a wealth of hands-on experiences for students at all levels. Field trips form an integral component of the curriculum. Subjects are integrated around a topic or ‘Unit of Inquiry' (PYP), with the specialist subject teachers working closely with the class teacher. All students learn Arabic either as a First or Second Language, and again, the lessons closely link to the theme of the class unit.

Teachers use a variety of assessment tools and techniques; at the beginning of a unit to find out what the students already know, during the unit to monitor how well the students are understanding, (this is called formative assessment) and at the end of a unit to assess what they have learned (summative assessment). From kindergarten students are taught how, and encouraged, to self-assess and peer assess and to reflect on their learning. I encourage you to look at the website, at each grade level to find out more about individual class programs and their projects.

Once again let me welcome you to our wonderful school. Please email me if you have any questions at all. I am happy to help you!
