The
Organization
Established in 1977 as an autonomous, non-profit, international research
center, ICARDA is one of the 15 international research centers supported
by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR),
which is co-sponsored by the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural
Development (IFAD), and the United Nations Development Programme.
ICARDA's mission is to contribute to the improvement of livelihoods
of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing food security and alleviating
poverty through research and partnerships to achieve sustainable increases
in agricultural productivity and income, while ensuring the efficient
and more equitable use and conservation of natural resources. With
its main research station and headquarters in Aleppo, Syria, and a
staff of over 500 scientists and support personnel, ICARDA works through
a network of partnerships with national agricultural research systems
(NARS), regional and international institutions, universities, advanced
research institutes, and non-governmental organizations. In addition
to its headquarters programs, ICARDA operates throughout the non-tropical
dry areas through regional programs and country offices.
The Position
ICARDA has an immediate vacancy for the position of Terbol Station
Manager & Resident Researcher under its Station Operations Program.
The position is based at ICARDA's Terbol Station, Lebanon. The following
will be the duties and responsibilities of the Terbol Station Manager
& Resident Researcher reporting to ICARDA's Farm Manager, Director
- Biodiversity and Integrated Gene Mananement Program (BIGMP) and
the Assistant Director General - International Cooperation and Communications:
Station Manager Duties:
Under the guidance of the ICARDA Headquarter Station Operations Farm
Manager, the Terbol Station manager:

Supervises farm operations including agricultural
workshop |
|
|
Coordinates station and farm activities |
|
|
Monitors land use and advises on crop rotations |
|
|
Keeps accurate records, and provides statistical
interpretation of data |
|
|
Supervises service, maintenance, repair and setting
of agricultural equipment |
|
|
Manages other station(s) in Lebanon |
|
|
Liaises with Farm/Station Manager of ICARDA's
HQ, Aleppo, Syria |
|
|
Provides appropriate training to national collaborators
under minimal supervision |
|
|
Ensure timely and quality operations and optimize
the use of the station's resources |
|
|
Provide quarterly progress and annual reports
on station's operation |
|
|
Performs other duties as and when required |
Research Duties:
Under the overall guidance of the Director of the BIGM Program:
|
|
Undertakes original research in collaboration
with BIGM scientists |
|
|
Supervises field activities, including measurements
of crop grain yield, field characteristics and the effects of
diseases and pests |
|
|
Contribute to the planning and implementation
of ICARDA's research projects in Lebanon along the research-for-development
continuum |
|
|
Provide needed technical backstopping to NARS
in Lebanon |
|
|
Participate in technology transfer activities
in Lebanon |
|
|
Performs other duties as and when required |
Organizational and Liaison Duties:
Under the overall guidance of the Assistant Director General - International
Cooperation and Communications:
|
|
Coordinates and facilitate ICARDA's activities
and cooperation with national institutions in Lebanon |
|
|
Bring needed visibility to ICARDA's activities
in Lebanon and communicate effectively with national collaborators
and other stakeholders in the country |
|
|
Contribute to resource mobilization and project
proposals development related to Lebanon |
|
|
Manages other ICARDA stations and offices in Lebanon |
|
|
Supervise and coordinate ICARDA administrative
and financial matters in Lebanon, including but not limited
to:
|
a)
|
Relations with the Host Country authorities |
|
b)
|
Financial matters |
| c) |
Human resources |
| d) |
Procurement |
|
|
|
Performs other duties as and when required |
Qualifications
and Experience
|
|
M.Sc./Ph.D. in Plant Breeding/ Plant Production |
|
|
At least 5 years experience in related field of
work, possibly also in Station Management and operation; preferably
with an international experience |
|
|
Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish original
research |
|
|
Experience in guiding staff and building team
work |
|
|
Computer literacy |
|
|
Fluent Arabic and English obligatory |
Terms
of Appointment
The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, renewable
thereafter on an annual basis. The salary is paid in US dollars. Benefits
include housing allowance, paid home leave travel, a pension scheme,
life and health insurance package, vehicle for business and personal
use, and support for dependents' education according to ICARDA Policy.
