The Society of Arab Colleges of Agriculture held their meeting in Damascus in April to discuss the harmonization of curricula and other matters related to university education in agriculture. The Deans of the Faculties of Agriculture from different Arab universities attended the meeting. A delegation of 12 Deans from this meeting visited ICARDA on 30 April to get acquainted with the research and training activities of the Center and to discuss the on-going and future collaboration of the Center with faculties of agriculture in the Arab World. They represented agricultural faculties of various universities in Sudan and Yemen. The delegation was headed by Prof. Dr Sadik Mohamed El-Hassan, General Secretary of the Society and Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum, Shambat, Sudan. Prof. Dr Adeeb Rahmeh, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture of Aleppo University, Syria, accompanied the delegation.
Prof. Dr Adel El-Beltagy, Director General, welcomed the visitors and briefed them on ICARDA's mandate and mission, research accomplishments, and human resource activities, including degree-oriented training. The visitors were given ICARDA's audiovisual presentation and a tour of the library and information dissemination facility, research laboratories of the Germplasm and Natural Resource Management Programs, field demonstration of improved crop varieties and water-harvesting techniques, small ruminants research facilities, integrated pest management research, seed production and processing facilities, and the genebank.
At a working lunch, members of ICARDA's management team briefed the visitors on ICARDA–university linkages and the opportunities available to graduate-students from agricultural faculties in Central and West Asia and North Africa to conduct their thesis research at ICARDA.
At the end of the visit, Prof. Dr El-Hassan presented to the Director General a plaque on behalf of the Society.
