“ICARDA Day” at Ain Shams University
In his keynote address Prof. Dr Adel El-Beltagy reviewed the dry-land agriculture challenges and how ICARDA is addressing them in collaboration with NARS and other partners.
ICARDA and the Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, Cairo jointly organized an "ICARDA Day" at the premises of the University on 18 April.

Staff members and graduate students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University and agricultural research organizations in Egypt participated in the event. Following an introduction by Dr Abdel Ghani El-Gendi, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, seven ICARDA presentations were made.

In his keynote presentation, Prof. Dr Adel El-Beltagy, Director General of ICARDA, highlighted the mission, organizational structure, partnerships, and research activities and achievements of ICARDA. The second presentation was made by Dr Magdy Madkour, Director of International Cooperation,

focusing on the activities and structure of ICARDA's regional programs and training activities. Five technical presentations followed: Dr Adel Aboul Nagga talked about crop and livestock management; Dr Ahmed Mustafa presented work conducted in the Arabian Peninsula on protected agriculture; Dr Michael Baum summarized achievements in gene management; Dr Mustafa Pala discussed natural resources management; and Dr Khaled Makkouk presented plant health research at ICARDA.

More than 20 posters, summarizing different research activities of ICARDA, were on display.

The presentations were followed by a general discussion of the problems of agriculture and the role of partnerships in addressing them.

Dr Saleh Hashim, President of Ain Shams University, invited the ICARDA delegation and senior staff of Ain Shams University to a reception at the Ain Shams University Hospitality House, where discussions on areas of mutual interest took place.

About ICARDA: Established in 1977, ICARDA (www.icarda.cgiar.org) serves the entire developing world for the improvement of barley, lentil, and faba bean; and dry-area developing countries for the on-farm management of water, improvement of nutrition and productivity of small ruminants (sheep and goats), and rehabilitation and management of rangelands.
