Prof. El-Beltagy Elected Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World
Prof. Dr Adel El-Beltagy, ICARDA Director General, has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing Countries (TWAS). His election, according to the President of TWAS, Dr C.N.R. Rao, is “in recognition of his outstanding contribution to science and its promotion in the developing world.” TWAS made this decision at its 16th General Meeting, held in Alexandria, Egypt, on 30 November 2005.

Prof. Dr Adel El-Beltagy, a stress physiology specialist, is known worldwide for his significant contributions to arid land research and development. As Director General of ICARDA, he has provided visionary leadership for agricultural research in Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA) for over a decade. He introduced new approaches to integrating agricultural research with development in the world’s dry areas and led efforts to rebuild agriculture in countries affected by conflict and natural disasters in the CWANA region.

Prof. Dr El-Beltagy has made enormous contributions to the CG system. He spearheaded the establishment of a CGIAR Consortium of 10 CG Centers for sustainable agricultural development in Central Asia and the Caucasus. He led efforts to establish the Future Harvest Consortium, in partnership with 34 institutions, including 10 CG centers, relief and development organizations, universities, aid agencies, and the government of Afghanistan, to rebuild agriculture in Afghanistan. The Consortium has succeeded in developing efficient seed systems, and a framework for long-term activities in seed and crop improvement, soil and water management, livestock feed and rangeland improvement, and horticulture.

Prof. Dr El-Beltagy has strived hard to ensure that the CGIAR maintains excellence in scientific agricultural research. He has served as Chair of the Center Directors Committee of the CGIAR, organized several international conferences under the auspices of the International Dryland Development Commission, and advocated the strengthening of dryland agricultural research through presentations at conferences and various other international forums.

He is a Fellow/Member of several other agricultural, scientific and development societies and organizations around the world. He has received several national, regional, and international awards, honors and recognitions, and chairs the boards of many scientific and development bodies worldwide. He has published more than 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Congratulations!
