Inception Workshop of the Sustainable Land Management
Research Project for Central Asia
An Inception Workshop on Sustainable Land Management Research (SLMR) Project under CACILM was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, 2-4 July, organized by ICARDA. The inaugural session was chaired by Prof. Abdushukur Khanazarov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources and Director General of the Uzbekistan Scientific Production Center for Agriculture. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Amir Amanov, Principal Consultant for Agriculture in the Office of the President of Uzbekistan.

Participants of the Inception Workshop of the 'Sustainable Land Management Research Project', Tashkent, 2-4 July.

There were 70 participants from the five Central Asian NARS, CGIAR Centers, ADB, FAO, NGOs and farmer associations. The objective of the workshop was to develop a research plan for sustainable use and productivity of renewable natural resources. The national partners reached agreement on key project issues: research sites, implementing partners and institutions, activities by site in each country, research plan, strategies for up-scaling, and budget allocations.

Project sites were chosen to represent the two major farming systems (irrigated and rainfed pastoral systems, which cover almost 90% of Central Asia). Two sites were selected in each country, to represent the major agro-ecologies, farming systems and land features (sloping vs relatively flat), and taking into consideration the major processes leading to land degradation.

The locations chosen will also allow trans-boundary comparisons of the performance of various resource conservation technologies.
