Dr John Ryan received the 2007 Soil Science Distinguished Service Award – in recognition of his lifetime contributions in soil science – at the Tri-Society (American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, and Crop Science Society of America) annual intenational meetings, held in New Orleans, USA, 4-8 November. Prof. Dr Iajuddin Ahmed, President of Bangladesh, presented the award to Dr Ryan. Scientists from IRRI, CIMMYT and ICRISAT also won awards, raising the image of the CGIAR’s scientific excellence in the world's major agricultural scientific forum.

Dr Ryan presented four poster papers at the Tri-Society meetings, describing research by ICARDA scientists in collaboration with colleagues from Turkey, Lebanon, Morocco and Uzbekistan. He also participated in the Golden Opportunities Scholar Forum and served as Chair of the L.R. Frederick Travel Grant Committee. Dr Ryan was also recognized at the Centenary Reception marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Society of Agronomy for authoring a chapter (along with Dr Bill Payne, Texas A&M) on the international history of ASA in the Centenary publication launched at the anniversary celebrations.
