Legume Traveling Workshop in Ethiopia
Participants of the Traveling Workshop on Legumes visit farmers’ fields in Ethiopia
A Traveling Workshop on Legumes was held in Ethiopia in collaboration with the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), 7-10 November.

Around 30 EIAR scientists, district extension workers and staff of the agriculture bureau participated. Drs Mathew Abang, Mohamed Imtiaz, Khaled Makkouk, and Safaa Kumari from ICARDA, and Dr Kate Longley of ICRISAT were the facilitators at the workshop.

The participants visited chickpea and lentil farmers' fields in Debre Zeit, Modjo, Minjar Shenkora, Chefe Donsa, Sendafa, Debre Burhan, Enewary and Butajira. Discussions were held with local farmers during the visits. An increasing number of farmers are adopting the Ascochyta blight resistant chickpea variety "Arerta" and the rust resistant lentil variety "Alemaya". Both varieties were developed through CARDA-EIAR collaboration.

The increased adoption of new varieties and associated management practices is a result of collaboration among all stakeholders, including farmers and community organizations involved in informal seed multiplication.

The traveling workshop concluded with a general discussion on major problems observed during the field visits, in order to identify issues that require further research.
