Lutz Stratmann, Minister for Science and Culture of the State of Lower Saxony, Germany; Prof Dr Mamoun Fansa, State Museum of Man and Nature, Oldenburg; and Prof Dr Jorge Marx Gomez, University of Oldenburg, discuss opportunities for collaboration with Dr William Erskine (left), ADG (Research).

HE Stratmann, accompanied by a small delegation, was visiting ICARDA to familiarize themselves with the center's work and explore areas of cooperation between ICARDA and German partner institutions. The delegation also looked at the possibility of ICARDA providing technical inputs to German-funded projects in the dry areas.

On behalf of Dr Mahmoud Solh, Director General, who was on business travel, Dr William Erskine, ADG-Research, welcomed H.E. Stratmann and his delegation members to ICARDA. Following an audiovisual presentation on ICARDA's activities, the delegation, accompanied by Dr Erskine and Dr Michael Baum, toured the various research and training facilities, and interacted with the research staff. The Minister offered ICARDA a scholarship for a suitable candidate to participate in the Summer School Biotechnology course at the University of Hannover.

The visit concluded with a wrap-up meeting with Dr Solh and senior ICARDA management. Dr Solh and the visitors expressed satisfaction with ongoing work, and reiterated the opportunities for expansion. "We have a long history of working together," said Dr Solh. "This has provided good examples of how research can improve livelihoods in rural areas. There are numerous opportunities to scale out this work, not only to additional areas in Qatar, but to other dry areas in the region."

The Qatari delegation included Sheikh Faleh Naser Aal Thani, General Director of Administration for Research and Agricultural Development; Mr Walid Fahed al-Mane, Director of Minister's Office; Mr Ali Mohammed al-Kubaisi, Consultant, Agricultural Affairs; Mr Issa Taleb Al-Ansari, Director, Public Relations; and Mr Abdul-Aziz Mohammed al-Jaber, Secretary.
