ICARDA-Developed Chickpea Variety Released in Canada
A kabuli chickpea line developed at ICARDA (FLIP 97-133C) has been released in Canada as a new variety named 'CDC Luna.' The variety has tolerance to cold and is moderately tolerant to Ascochyta blight disease.

The Crop Development Center (CDC) of the University of Saskatchewan released the variety after conducting field trials, which were highly successful.

Acknowledging the contribution of ICARDA in developing this new variety, the Pulse Crop Breeder of CDC, Dr Bunyamin Taran, has said that the variety has been registered in Canada as 'CDC Luna' and Dr R. S. Malhotra has been named as the co-breeder in the registration with the Canadian Government.

Dr Mahmoud Solh, Director General, congratulated Dr Malhotra on the release of this variety.

FLIP 97-133C now called CDC Luna, was developed from a cross made in 1994 between cold-tolerant, Ascochyta blight-tolerant and early lines at ICARDA. The improved line was selected in 1997 and sent to cooperators in different countries, including Canada, as Chickpea International Elite Nursery -Southerly Latitude 2 in 2000.
