New ICARDA Cultivars Released in Syria
The Syrian National Variety Release Committee held a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in Damascus on 12 July. H.E. Prof. Dr Adel Safar, Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, chaired the meeting. The Committee discussed the results obtained from seven new varieties of bread wheat, barley, cotton and lentil.

Dr Ahmed El-Ahmed, ADG (GL) represented ICARDA at the meeting. Representatives from the General Commission for Scientific Agricultural Research (GCSAR), General Organization for Seeds Multiplication (GOSM), Plant Protection Directorate, Directorate of Agricultural Extension, and Syrian, Universities were also present.

As a result of collaborative work between ICARDA and the Syrian national program, three ICARDA-bred lines were approved for release for general cultivation in Syria. The Committee named the newly released varieties and recommended zones for their cultivation.

Two new bread wheat lines (Acc# 19918 and Atrees 1) were released as Bouhoth 8 and Joulan 2, the first for irrigated areas and the second for rainfed areas in zone 1.

The new lentil line ILL 7947 was released as Ibla 1. This variety has shown good resistance to Fusarium wilt disease, yielded 24% more than the local variety (Kurdi 1) and also has large seeds.
