Regional Expert Workshop on Herbal, Medicinal and
Aromatic Plants
A Regional Expert Workshop on the ‘Role of Herbal, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (HMAPs) in Improving the Livelihoods of the Rural Poor’ was held at ICARDA on 10-12 June 2007, jointly organized by ICARDA and IFAD. There were 56 participants from 23 countries, representing, research, development, international and regional institutions, and NGOs. The discussions covered various areas: constraints and opportunities for HMAP collection, production and marketing; comparative advantages and market potentials; success stories; ongoing initiatives and future strategies.

The participants agreed on the need to strengthen existing national and regional initiatives and to establish a global network on HMAPs for the dry areas, in collaboration with the Global Horticulture Initiative (GHI) and other international centers.
