Foreword

Faba beans are affected by a number of diseases that could cause great annual losses and sometimes complete crop failures. Although these diseases can be managed partially by certain fungicides and modified cultural practices, effective crop protection can be achieved only if host-resistance is used as a major component. Therefore, developing specific screening techniques for the detection of useful sources of resistance to major diseases has received special attention at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).
The compilation of information on these techniques in the form of a manual should prove useful to plant pathologists, breeders and others interested in host screening for disease resistance. I hope that the manual would serve as a valuable training material and help in identifying new disease resistance sources for use in improving productivity, and yield stability of faba bean.
