ISBN: 92-9127-185-4. A wide range of food and forage legumes are grown throughout Ethiopia, providing nutritional and livelihoods benefits. About 60% of the legume harvest is consumed by the farm household, and only a small proportion sold - although these figures are reversed in some areas for some crops. This volume contains papers presented at a national workshop to review progress and identify sources of future growth. They cover various aspects - crop improvement, farmer-participatory breeding, disease and pest management, genetic resources, technology dissemination, adoption trends and constraints, marketing and other socioeconomic issues, food science, seed production and related issues, farm implements, agroclimatic analysis, and nitrogen fixation. The crops discussed include field and grass pea; common, haricot and faba bean; lentil, chickpea, soybean, fenugreek, and lupine. Price US$40.00 Order
ISBN: 92-9127-177-3 Historical evidence suggests that the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region is one of the most important domestication centers from where small ruminant production expanded to other areas. Adapted to the marginal environments of the region, the small ruminants found in WANA represent a rich source of genetic diversity necessary for production orientation and diversification. With the constantly growing human population, the demand for meat, milk and other dairy products is also growing, and farmers have new opportunities to increase their income by capitalizing on the small ruminant genetic diversity available. This publication is an outcome of ICARDA's efforts to catalog the available genetic variation of small ruminants in the WANA region. It contains information on 75 sheep and 32 goat breeds found in the region. The information should prove useful in matching genetic diversity with the production base and market opportunities; identifying useful traits, such as tolerance to dry environments and high productivity; and in identifying the genotypes facing the risk of genetic erosion and how this can be avoided. Price US$20.00 Order
The drylands are home to more than a billion people in some 100 countries. They are rich in agrobiodiversity, but they present a unique ecosystem that is caharcterized by low mean annual rainfall, high evaporative demand, and high annual and seasonal climatic variability. This publication presents the text of presentations made at the Seventh International Conference on the Development of Drylands, held on 14-17 September 2003, in Tehran, Iran. It represents yet another milestone in the efforts of the International Dryland Development Commission (IDDC) to promote awareness about the challenges in the sustainable development of dryland areas and strengthen scientific networks to tackle the problems. It is a good resource material for researchers, extension workers, development agencies and NGOs, and other members of the society engaged in the task of environmental protection and in promoting sustainable development in dryland areas. Barley is an important food crop among communities in dry marginal environments and a major staple food in some parts of North Africa and the Near East, the highlands of Central Asia, Horn of Africa, Andean countries and the Baltic States. It remains the most viable option in dry areas and in production systems where alternative food crops are limited. This publication documents the presentations made at the international workshop on food barley improvement held in Hammamet, Tunisia, in 2002. It highlights experiences in food barley production in over 14 countries, including a review of food barley-based farming systems, bottlenecks in production, research efforts in improvement, major cultivated varieties, quality characteristics desired by consumers, and constraints to production and research needs. It should prove useful for researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, policymakers, donor agencies, farmers, and the general public, who have an interest in barley production. This publication is a product of a Marketing Group project of the CGIAR, hosted by ICARDA. The involvement of CGIAR Centers in rebuilding agriculture in countries affected by conflict and natural disasters spans nearly three decades and has benefited more than 47 countries. But the information on the role played by them and the impact of their work is scattered in literature. The aim of this study was to document that information at one place with a view to providing a fuller picture of the role of the CGIAR Centers in rebuilding agriculture in both man-made and natural disaster situations. Single copies of "Healing Wounds" may be requested from the Head, Communication, Documentation and Information Services (s.varma@CGIAR.ORG), ICARDA, Aleppo, Syria.
