Overview
ICARDA's training activities are designed to improve the capabilities of national agricultural research scientists in the
developing countries to assist them in conducting their research independently. These activities also foster transfer of technology and address issues related to farmers' decisions in adopting or rejecting new technologies.

Since 1978, ICARDA has provided training opportunities to over 10,000 individuals from more than 100 countries.

Group Training
Long-term courses: These 4- to 18-week courses are held at ICARDA's headquarters during the cropping season from March to June. They are designed for researchers and technicians currently working in national agricultural research programs. Course participants should have a BSc in agriculture; however, candidates with a high school diploma and some research experience may also be considered.

Specialized short courses: These 1- to 3-week intensive courses focus on specialized problems or topics of interest to national agricultural research programs, and are conducted at ICARDA's headquarters or other sites. Specialized short courses can be regional, sub-regional or in-country.

Examples of Course Areas:
Specialized short courses at ICARDA headquarters: DNA Molecular Marker Techniques for Crop Improvement, Application of Molecular Tools for Biodiversity Studies, Management of Water Resources and Improvement of Water-Use Efficiency in the Dry Areas, IPM, Natural Resource Management, Scientific Writing and Data Presentation, GIS/RS, Seed Production and Technology, Seed Certification, Seed Processing and Storage, Seed Economy, Seed Health Testing, Farm Survey and Data Analysis, Spatial Analysis and Variety Trials, Utilization of Expert Systems in Agricultural Research and Production, Range Land Management, Biosaline Agriculture and Sustainable Production System, Farm Survey and Data Collection; Spatial Weather Generation.

In-Country specialized short courses: Participatory Research and Technology Transfer, Use of CropSyst Simulation mode Monitoring and Evaluation of Adoption and Impact, Integrated Pest Management, Quality Seed Production, Seed Quality Assurance, Seed Enterprise Development and Management, Plant Variety Protection, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Biometrical Techniques with Computer Applications, Evaluation, Characterization and Utilization of Food Legume Germplasm, Evaluation Strategies for Supplemental Irrigation.

Research Fellowship
This non-degree training program is offered to junior researchers. The program is tailored to meet individual needs and may range from one week to one year.

Senior Research Fellowship

This program is designed for senior researchers from national agricultural research programs, who typically have an MSc or BSc and several years of experience. They work at ICARDA headquarters or elsewhere in the region with ICARDA scientists for a few weeks to months on non-degree research or to receive specialized training.

Graduate Research Training (GRT)
A candidate registered for an MSc or a PhD at a university can conduct part or all of his/her thesis research at ICARDA. The research topics must relate to ICARDA's mandated research and have direct relevance to the candidate's national agricultural research program. Graduate research students at ICARDA are supervised by a senior scientist who acts as a member of the candidate's advisory committee.
