Research Opportunities
Student Research at WLI benchmark sites
The summer student exchange program, an integral part of WLI’s capacity development efforts, is currently underway in five partnering countries. The program aims to:
- encourage graduate students and young scientists from the U.S. and the Middle East to pair up and engage in research at the WLI benchmark sites, and
- to create a conducive environment for the exchange of information and technical expertise between the U.S. and Middle Eastern Universities.
To date, the program has created research opportunities for five students from the United States, and seven students from the Middle East (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria). The research topics were formulated through a collaborative effort that involved the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS), as well as the students and their advisors from their respective universities. The universities involved in the program include the Aleppo University (AU) - Syria, American University in Cairo (AUC), American University of Beirut (AUB) - Lebanon, Birzeit University (BZU) - Palestine, Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), Texas A&M University (TAMU), University of California-Davis (UC-Davis), Utah State University (USU), University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UI-UC), and Zagazig University (ZU) – Egypt.
