Mechanized raised-bed crop package produces more wheat for less water

Improved wheat technology packages disseminated to 30,000 farmers across 10 countries

No-till seeding gives higher yields, while conserving soil resources
 

Introduction

Enhancing Food Security in Arab Countries, led by ICARDA, aims to enhance the productivity of food crops, especially wheat across eight countries. Adopting a participatory approach, the initiative tests, validates and disseminates proven innovations and technologies to farmers - including improved wheat varieties, sustainable agronomic practices such as conservation agriculture, and the more efficient use of scarce water resources.

DELIVERING TECHNOLOGIES

Often, a major challenge is getting the results of agricultural research off the shelves and out into farmer’s fields. Effective technology transfer mechanisms are essential, not just between researchers and farmers, but between farmers and other farmers.

TESTING TECHNOLOGIES

Innovations, technologies and practices are tested in farmer conditions – including improved crop varieties, more efficient irrigation systems that guarantee ‘more crop per drop,’ and proven and more sustainable agronomic practices such as raised bed planting and conservation agriculture.
