Arab Food Security Project: Capacity Strengthening

Across all participating countries, the initiative adopted a varied approach to capacity strengthening: country and regional training activities, inter-country scientific visits, travelling workshops and symposia, farmer field schools and field days have all been organized with the active participation of farmers and extension and technical staff from agriculture-related ministries, institutions and associations.

From 2011-2014 more than 42,000 participants and beneficiaries benefited from capacity strengthening initiatives – approximately two-thirds of them farmers.

In order to enhance the capacity of young agricultural scientists, a special training program was designed and implemented. In this context, 34 young scientists were trained successfully in various areas and themes, particularly those related to wheat-based systems such as breeding field crops, biotechnology, plant protection, and water and land management.
