Barley-livestock systems - better climate change resilience for farmers

Barley-livestock systems - better climate change resilience for farmers

Improving community awareness and facilitating access to new technologies can support effective adaptation to climate change

Barley-based livestock farmers in the Middle East and North Africa face an uncertain future due to global climate variability. Often active on the fringes of deserts and steppes, or at high elevations with modest or no inputs, erratic rains and prolonged drought threaten the livelihoods of an already impoverished population. Increased evapotranspiration, drier soils, and shorter growing seasons will lead to decreasing productivity and declining incomes. This research initiative enhances community adaptation to climate change, improving awareness and facilitating access to technologies and management practices that strengthen resilience and productivity.

Features

Monitoring the impacts of climate change

Iraqi and Jordanian researchers were recently instructed on the application of GIS technologies – a crucial tool to assist in the monitoring of climate change impacts. More

Strengthening community resilience

ICARDA recently facilitated a farmer-centered knowledge exchange involving producers from both Jordan and Iraq – part of an on-going initiative to strengthen community resilience to climate change. More

Enhancing the resilience of dairy farmers

An initiative in southern Jordan is strengthening the resilience of dairy producers, delivering technologies to enhance milk production, processing, and product quality. The result: higher productivity and incomes. More

Conservation agriculture: Mitigating the effects of climate change

Conservation agriculture – the practice of not plowing farmland and leaving crop residue in the field for improved soil fertility and water conservation – holds significant potential for the world’s dry areas, including Iraq and Jordan. More

Workshop promotes coping mechanisms for farmers

A recent workshop provided a forum for researchers to discuss and recommend a series of coping mechanisms to help farmers deal with the impacts of climate change. More
