Improved seeds for Central Asia

Improved seeds suited to local conditions will soon be available to millions of farmers in Central Asia and the Caucasus through a newly-established Regional Seed Association based in Ankara.


ADB provides US$2m grant to combat land degradation, climate change woes

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing a US$2 million grant for the formulation, adoption and implementation of land degradation policies and strategies and to reduce the vulnerability to climate change of target developing member countries.


The second phase of Center Commissioned External Review has started

The second phase of Center Commissioned External Review of CGIAR program for Central Asia and the Caucasus has been started by the meeting, organized especially for the CCER Panel Members in Tashkent, on 28-29 April 2008.


A study on ICT needs in Kyrgyzstan

A pilot study on “Assessment of information and communication needs of institutions and stakeholders of the national agricultural research and extension system of Kyrgyzstan” was launched in January, 2008, by ICARDA-CAC, with the support from FAO.

Oasis Finalizes Challenge Program Proposal in Bonn

The Secretariat hosted a meeting jointly organized by CGIAR Centers ICARDA and ICRISAT in Bonn, Germany during 12-14 March to finalize a global proposal for a leading-edge science program to combat agriculturally-caused dryland degradation and desertification. This program is called the "Oasis Challenge Program"and will be submitted to the CGIAR Science Council and Executive Council for consideration.

Dr. Christopher Martius, Head, PFU-CGIAR, visits to Tbilisi, Georgia

Dr. Christopher Martius, Head, PFU-CGIAR, and Regional Coordinator, ICARDA-CAC, had a three-day visit to Tbilisi to meet major stakeholders, identify pressing issues for CGIAR intervention, meet the ICARDA focal point, and identify new partners.

Mapping Poverty to Enhance Research Targeting and Impact

The workshop on “Poverty assessment and mapping in dry areas: implications for better targeting the impact of agricultural R&D investments” was held at ICARDA Headquarters on 25-26 February, 2008. The workshop was organized jointly by ICARDA, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Program (WFP). There were 24 participants from national research centers and government agencies in six countries (Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Yemen) and 11 ICARDA scientists.

PFU-CGIAR PARTICIPATES IN THE STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING OF ECOSAN

Annual Steering Committee Meeting of ECOSAN, an international NGO based in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, was organized on 25th of December, 2007 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. ECOSAN is active in the countries of Central Asia, especially in Uzbekistan, in the areas of environment, health, sustainable management of land and water resources, and social development.


WORKSHOPS TO BRING BUSINESS PLANNING SKILLS FOR WUA MANAGERS OF THE FERGHANA VALLEY

In December, 2007, training workshops were organized in four places of Ferghana Valley to train and enhance planning skills of WUA managers within the framework of “Integrated Water Resources Management in the Ferghana Valley (IWRM-FV)” project, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by IWMI and the Scientific Information Center (SIC), the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (ICWC) of Central Asia.
