Research programs

To address critical challenges and strengthen resilience across the dry areas ICARDA advances scientific knowledge, shapes practices and informs policy through three research programs:

  • Biodiversity and crop improvement: conserving germplasm and harnessing advanced crop science to breed climate-resilient crops.
  • Resilient agricultural livelihood systems: building integrated crop-livestock farming systems that optimize economic, social and environmental conditions.
  • Water, Land Management and Ecosystems: supporting the sustainable use of water and land resources through rain-fed, irrigated and agro-pastoral farming.

The research and development agenda implemented by these three programs covers five strategic priorities: conserving and developing genetic resources; climate change adaptation; strengthening resilience; promoting value chains and policies; and enhancing water and land productivity.

These priorities are supplemented by three cross-cutting research themes: scaling-up proven technologies; empowering women and youth; building capacity; and Big Data and ICT.
