ICARDA mourns demise of ex-colleague and scientist, Dr. Ahmed El-Ahmed

ICARDA lost a valuable ex-colleague and an accomplished plant pathologist, Dr. Ahmed El-Ahmed on September 19, 2016. In his last role at ICARDA, Dr. El-Ahmed served as the center’s Assistant Director-General for Government Liaison from 2005 to 2008. Prior to that, Dr. El-Ahmed made significant contributions to the advancements in plant pathology through his research work at ICARDA and CIMMYT. He also headed ICARDA’s regional office in Tunisia from 1980 to 1986.
 
Dr. El-Ahmed was an editorial member for the newsletter for Plant Protection in the Arab countries and the Near East, produced by the Arab Society for Plant Protection in cooperation with the UN’s Regional Office for the Near East of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
 
Late Dr. El-Ahmed also held academic positions as a professor and later as the head of the Department of Plant Protection, College of Agriculture, University of Aleppo, Syria. He had mentored several Masters and PhD students and was an active science writer. 
 
ICARDA staff conveyed their condolences to Dr. El-Ahmed’s family and friends.
